Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I have been tutoring for three years already, and have always thoroughly enjoyed my job. Most of you have probably heard the cliche explanations of how personally rewarding and enriching the teaching experience can be. To me, teaching isn't about making me feel good inside. I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I find people and the world around us endlessly fascinating.
Why should a student pick you?
- First and foremost, a student should pick me because although I am a teacher, i am still a student myself, and I view learning as an engaging and exciting lifelong activity. I have a knack for finding something interesting about every subject, and once something becomes interesting, learning becomes exciting.
I am also versatile, having taught everything from basic times tables to the irregular subjunctive forms of the German language. A student who works with me will not only learn about a specific subject, but he or she will also develop skills that can be applied to any subject, such as the ability to research, reason, and solve problems. I teach my students learn the most valuable skill in any education: how to teach themselves.
Personal Statement:
- I'm finishing my English Writing and Rhetoric degree at St. Edward's University. While my specialty with tutoring is writing and reading, I can also assist in languages--specifically, French and German. Most of my experience is with college students, both as a private tutor and teaching assistant for a Rhetoric and Composition II class, but for three years I also taught middle school part-time. I worked for a federally-funded program for disadvantaged children, primarily those who have failed the state-required TAKS test. The is experience has exposed me to students of many different ages, learning styles/abilities, as well as many non-native speakers of English. I also have worked extensively with students with a variety of disabilities, and find great joy in helping them accomplish their dreams.
In the fall, I'll be beginning my Ph.D in Digital Rhetoric and Literacy
Any Last Words?
- There are only two kinds of people in the world: the kind that believe that there are only two kinds of people, and the kind that don't.
I am an Austin native living in a carriage house in South Austin that I spent the three of my teenage years designing, building, and decorating. I still live in this Travis Heights home seven years later and enjoy watching the bats fly over my roof every night when they're in season. I have a cat named Klaus, three beta fish (Cosette, Baudelaire, and Phantome), and a late Indian Runner duck named Lenore.
